Book ICO title

The Nemesis Gene

Author

K.H. Rennie

The presale of my book The Nemesis Gene would supply funds to go towards a developmental editor looking at it from a fresh perspective and hopefully  advising on perhaps gaps in the storyline or finer development of characters. I'm satisfied with it, but an author can't always see the wood for the trees. and there's lots of trees in this forest.

I'm really excited about the possibilities Publica offers authors. It's not just a new way of publishing - it's a whole new experiment in collaboration in the process of writing and producing books for information and/or entertainment.

About the author

K.H. Rennie's first novel was based on the travels of the Russian Ethnographer Nikolai Mikluoho Maclay, who visited New Guinea in 1870. Maclay: A Novel.

More recently she's been writing epic fantasy, set in a pseudo-medieval world suggested by her love of medieval history and perhaps childhood memories of ancient architecture, cold seas, and snow. The first book in this series is Triton's Deep.

Sorcery is a game without rules. Jarrad has little more than a basic grasp of sorcery when he's given a task way beyond his pay grade. And he's tested in more ways than one when he meets up with the beautiful Elwyn, who happens to have a peculiar genetic link to a vixen spirit.

Excerpt from Chapter Two

Jarrad stood absolutely still, trying to understand what he had just heard. The abbot had made a mistake, surely. In his befuddled state he had confused Jarrad with someone else, Georgias perhaps – but Georgias was short and swarthy, while Jarrad was a head taller than the other lay brothers and his shock of dark red curls was unmistakeable.

Abbot Zoric rose from his seat unaided and now seemingly quite spry, and left the room followed by Brother Declen and the other senior monks. As Jarrad came to his senses and thought to follow the lay brothers out of the chamber Prior Rupert shook his head and beckoned him forward.

‘The abbot will see you before vespers. But take that contraption away first and dispose of it.’ He glared at the box at Jarrad’s feet as if it was something vile, not just a few pieces of wood bonded with the residue of boiled horse hides. Jarrad picked up the box and stood with head bowed, feeling the full weight of the prior’s stare.

‘You had better make preparations. You will leave tomorrow.’

‘Tomorrow, Brother? But ...’

‘I don’t know how you did it, Brother Jarrad, but you have somehow managed to prove yourself worthy.’

There had to be a way out. If only he could make them understand. ‘But I don’t know either, Brother. I was bewitched. That ... that sorcery was none of my doing.’

‘No? Then your task will be all the harder, and if you were bewitched, then the choice was made by someone or something beyond our authority. I advise you to think on that.’ The big monk then turned on his heel and strode quickly away.

Jarrad did think on it. Clearly Prior Rupert suspected him of some sort of chicanery. But what would be the point? And how could it be true that he had been chosen by an outside agency?

What is happening? Why do they think I had anything to do with that charade?

It was clearly the fox, no, the vixen, he corrected himself. She had set a trap for him after the encounter on the crags. He would explain to the abbot. Surely he would understand. Then the brothers would choose someone else for their mission and life would continue for him as expected. But a sick churning in his stomach contradicted this attempt at denial. The abbot had decided, and right or wrong, his will was not to be questioned. Prior Rupert might frown and show his dark displeasure, but he could say or do nothing to influence the abbot’s decision.

The chapter house was empty now. The rain still rattled against the arched windows, but the fire in the hearth had turned to glowing coals. Jarrad set the box on the floor and prepared to break it apart and feed the pieces to the fire, but he thought again of the rabbit kitten. He checked the secret compartment. No, the tiny soft thing had definitely gone. Had he not tasted its blood and felt the final beating of its terrified heart in his mouth? He wiped his hand across his brow. If that vixen ever crossed his path again he vowed he would take his jack knife to her silver throat and slit it from ear to ear.

What is a Book ICO?

Book ICO is the next generation way to kick-start books — authors publish their way.

ICO’s took 2017 by storm. Publica Book ICO’s are the next generation crowdfunder-plus-presale for ebooks where authors are free to publish their way.

Authors — You set your own prices for during and after your Book ICO. When your book is a recognized token on a blockchain you’re selling book tokens directly to your followers who support you and look forward to the promised release.

Presale funds can improve the quality of independently published books. Or publicize great books that might never find their true audience without it.Your book tokens work anywhere in the world on any iOS or Android device.

Readers — When you buy a book token, that’s your private access key to read the book in your Publica reader app available now for iOS and Android phones and tablets. Many Chromebooks too.

You can also send book tokens to other people, unlike any conventional ebook. So buy as many book tokens as you want!

You can also sell recognized book tokens on a secondary token exchange so depending on the total circulation of a book’s tokens, tokens in your wallet may grow in value if the book becomes collectable.

What are you waiting for? Oh, the countdown clock...

With no middleman, authors are in full control of their author business. Blockchain empowers authors by placing them at the heart of the financial model.
